Cultivating Peace: Orchid-Based Strategies at the Andes-Amazon Intersection
Caquetá, where the Andes meet the Amazon, faces significant deforestation and biodiversity loss following the 2016 peace agreement. At “Orchids for Peace,” we use orchids as flagship species to promote conservation and raise awareness. Our work includes documenting orchid diversity, establishing nurseries, and training local communities in conservation practices.
Moving forward, we aim to deepen our exploration of Caquetá’s orchids, enhance collections, and further engage rural communities in conservation. We seek funding to preserve orchids and their ecosystems, with a focus on sustainable tourism and community involvement (Read the Research Report).
Key Aspects of the Project:
- Nature-Based Economies: We foster sustainable bioeconomies by cultivating endemic orchid genera suited for horticulture in Caquetá. Our objective is to promote plant ecotourism in this biodiversity-rich region, historically marginalized due to conflict.
- Community Engagement: We actively involve local communities in both in situ and ex situ conservation strategies, developing sustainable practices and providing alternative income through tourism, orchid cultivation, and legal trade.
- Documenting Biodiversity and Strengthening Collections: Our field expeditions document orchids at the Andes-Amazon ecotone, enhancing local and international herbaria with specimens, photographs, and DNA samples. We’ve published the region’s first orchid checklist and are finalizing a user-friendly guide. Despite these advances, less than 40% of the territory has been explored.
Our Future Vision: A Celebration of Orchids and Nature
We’re thrilled to unveil our vision for transforming the region into a paradise for orchid enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. Picture captivating interpretative trails winding through 5-10 reserves, where visitors can immerse themselves in the breathtaking beauty of our diverse ecosystems. These trails will invite tourists to experience the magic of our local flora, including the stunning native orchids that define our landscape.
Our plans extend beyond exploration. We aim to cultivate and showcase native orchids, offering them to both national and international markets. By sharing these exquisite species with the world, we hope to spread the enchantment of our local orchids far and wide.
To further celebrate and promote our passion for orchids, we will host vibrant orchid fairs and establish a regional orchid association. These events and initiatives will not only invigorate the local economy but also deepen the bond between people and Caquetá’s unique natural heritage. By connecting with our ecosystems, we are committed to ensuring their preservation for generations to come.
Join us in this exciting journey as we bring the beauty of orchids to the forefront and foster a lasting appreciation for our extraordinary environment. Your support will help us turn this vision into reality.
