August 5 – Arrival in Medellín
Transfer to a charming rural hotel. Evening inaugural dinner with local orchid growers; first introduction to Colombia’s orchid culture.
August 6 – Botanical Garden & Medellín
Explore Jardín Botánico de Medellín (tropical forests, butterfly house, desert garden). Evening welcome session to review tour goals.
August 7 – Orchid Workshop & Colomborquídeas
Hands-on orchid workshop. Private visit to Colomborquídeas collection, guided by Juan Felipe P osada, “Disneyworld of orchids.”
August 8 – Alma del Bosque & Cantos de Agua
Morning tour of Alma del Bosque with orchid grower Daniel Piedrahita. Afternoon at Cantos de Agua gardens.
August 9 – Travel to Jardín
Scenic drive with traditional lunch. Short walk outside town to see Andean Cock-of-the-rock lek. Overnight at Hotel Plantación.
August 10 – Orchid Exploration in Jardín
Guided visit to Reserva Orquídeas. See Lepanthes, Dracula, and cultivated orchids. Climb Ventanas road (8,202 ft) for highland orchids.
August 11 – ProAves Reserve
Visit ProAves Reserve: see Masdevallia hortensis, endangered Yellow-eared Parrot, and Quindío wax palms. Overnight at Recinto del Pensamiento, Manizales.
August 12 – Los Nevados National Park
Explore Los Nevados National Park for high-altitude orchids: Maxillaria, Cyrtochilum, Oncidium, Caucaea. Trek scenic paramo landscapes.
August 13 – Romelia Reserve & Travel to Pereira
Visit Romelia Reserve (300+ orchids). Spot rare birds like Ultramarine Grosbeak. Evening transfer t o Pereira hotel.
August 14 – Otún Quimbaya Sanctuary
Explore wild orchids: Comparettia falcata, Oncidium chrysomorphum, Cyrtochilum midas. Cloud forest trails and birdwatching. Travel to El Cairo Reserve near Salento.
August 15 – La Dicha Nature Reserve & Toche Valley
Visit La Dicha Reserve (90 native orchids). Afternoon in Salento, then Toche Valley and towering wax palms.
August 16 – Travel to Montezuma
Drive to Pueblo Rico and 4×4 ride to Cerro Montezuma. Explore tropical forests with orchids like Erycina, Rodriguezia, Maxillaria, Sigmatostalix, Scaphosepalum. Overnight at Montezuma Rainforest Lodge.
August 17 – Upper Montezuma Exploration
Sunrise at Cerro Montezuma; search highland orchids: Otoglossum, Phragmipedium, Dracula, Porroglossum eduardi, Brachionidium, Lepanthes.
August 18– Montezuma to Pereira
Morning exploration of middle-elevation orchids: Pleurothallis, Dichaea, Epidendrum, Sobralia, Elleanthus, Huntleya. Optional river walk/swim. Afternoon transfer to Pereira, farewell dinner.
August 19 – Departure
Private transfer to Pereira Airport. Depart with unforgettable memories of Colombia’s orchids and landscapes.

Sebastián Moreno, M.Sc. –
One of Colombia’s leading orchid taxonomists, particularly noted for his work with Pleurothallidinae. He has co-described dozens of new orchid species, including many Lepanthes, from diverse Andean ecosystems. His expertise spans taxonomy, systematics, and discovering orchids in Colombia’s high Andean and Chocó-Andean regions. Sebastián brings unique insights from years of field and lab work on Colombia’s extraordinary orchids.
Challen Willemsen B.Sc.– –
An ecologist, educator, and orchid specialist with over 14 years of field experience in Guatemala. He has worked extensively in orchid conservation, urban biodiversity, and epiphyte ecology, including long-term research and stewardship at Santuario Natural El Tular. In addition to his work as a botanist and conservation advocate, Challen is an experienced nature tour guide specializing in tropical flora and plant ecology.
